Music Ministry Opportunities

Children, preschool through 5th grade, have several music opportunities throughout the year during Sunday School to prepare for the annual Christmas Pageant, mid-week ministry to prepare for worship, and Vacation Bible School. Youth, 6th - 12th grade, also enjoy music options which encompass worship offerings for Youth Sundays and additional worship services, sharing music from retreats and mission trips, leading music for Vacation Bible School, singing or playing with the Music Team or Chancel Choir, playing tone chimes, and Christmas caroling. Adults of all ages participate weekly with the Music Team and the Chancel Choir with additional opportunities that include vocal and instrumental ensembles, quartets, a men's ensemble, a tone chime choir, and select soloists.

Youth Sunday School

The Mid-High Sunday School Class, grades 6-8, meets with Gary and Camille Hatter and uses Encounter Curriculum, which is a Bible-based, culturally relevant, and personally challenging teen Sunday school curriculum. The middle school group examines in depth both the Old and New Testaments.

The Confirmation of Faith Program is taught during the 9th grade year. This class is taught by Seth Lovell, Ruffin King, Amy Effland, and Cheryl Wetmore-Simpson. The curriculum is a blend of resources from the PC(USA) and RE:FORM Curriculum.

Senior-High Sunday School is for high school youth in grades 10-12 and is taught by Mark and Cynthia Lorenzoni. The Lorenzonis combine scripture and popular media to engage the youth in important discussions about issues affecting high school youth and how to live out their faith.

Church Family Dinners

Each fall and winter the Olivet Church family has the opportunity to gather each Wednesday evening for a meal and a time of sharing and learning. Cooking teams prepare simple meals beginning at 5:30pm, and those attending are invited to make a donation to defray expenses. At 6:15pm, there is a study group for adults. The gatherings in the fall conclude with an annual Thanksgiving dinner on the Wednesday before the week of Thanksgiving.

Youth Fellowship

Youth Fellowship gatherings take place throughout the year, September through June. Typically, the youth gather on Sunday evenings for a time of fun, fellowship, and study.

There are numerous special activities that take place throughout the year. The youth have lots of opportunities for fun and service. The youth will take hiking trips, rake leaves in the fall, go Christmas caroling, and join with other area youth groups for special outings. There is typically an “off-campus” event every other month.

Youth Ministry at Olivet

Olivet Presbyterian Church provides a welcoming youth ministry that nurtures a strong sense of community with others, where each individual is valued and nurtured, and all are accepted as God's unique creations.  Our mission statement is “enabling young people to understand and recognize who Jesus is, and what it means to live for him.”  This is accomplished in numerous ways, providing youth with many opportunities for spiritual and personal growth.  We are blessed at Olivet to have a committed group of adult volunteers dedicated to working with our youth and encouraging them in their walk of faith.

Youth Trips

Throughout the course of the year, the Olivet Youth Group takes multiple trips to lots of exciting places.  Every summer, there is a Youth Mission Trip for our High School Youth. The trip rotates from a domestic trip one year, to an international trip the next. Over the years, the youth have visited places like West Virginia, Kentucky, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Belize. The yearly mission trip gives the youth an opportunity to recognize the value of service to others, and how through serving others, we are ultimately serving Christ.

During the summer, there are also opportunities for the youth to attend Presbyterian Conferences.  The Midde School Youth attend the Massanetta Middle-School Conference that takes place every June, and the Senior-High Youth attend the Montreat Youth Conference in July. These trips are a great opportunity for youth to meet other youth from all over the country, and grow their faith, while experiencing the greater body of Christ.

During the year, there are also opportunities for youth to travel to places like Washington, DC; New York City; and the Massanutten Resort. These weekend trips change each year, so check your calendar.
